Animal-derived medications: cultural considerations and available alternatives

Abstract Context Cultural competency is a cornerstone of patient-centered health care. Religious doctrines may define appropriate consumption or use certain animals and forbid others. Many medications contain ingredients that are animal-derived; these be unacceptable to individual patients within the context their religious beliefs lifestyle choices. Knowledge animal-derived as component cultural can facilitate dialogue shifts focus from group individual, away toward humility, paternalistic provider/patient dynamic one partnership. Objectives To explore how drug components impact medication selection acceptability perspective patients, physicians, leaders evidenced by studies question via survey questionnaire. A secondary objective products build framework supporting development humility. Methods systematic search was performed in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, ProQuest databases using combinations following terms: “medication selection,” “medication,” “adherence,” “pharmaceutical preparations,” “religion medicine,” “religion,” “animal,” “dietary,” “porcine,” “bovine.” Studies reported surveys questionnaires examine patient, physician, leader on published English between 1990 2020 were included. Review articles, opinion pieces, case reports, persons other than leaders, languages excluded. Three authors independently reviewed articles extract information pertaining perspectives animal-based ingredients. Results Eight meeting described criteria found queried knowledge physicians regarding medical biologic origin. Those full this review. Conclusions help open conversations with around spiritual history competency, particularly for those belonging sects human- products. Further formal study needed more fully extent which animal- human-derived medications. Guidelines developed aid identifying whom discussion relevant. More quantify qualify constituents.
